Microsoft Copilot Review
AI Assistant · AI Assistants & Research
AI inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams — the Office equivalent of Gemini in Workspace.
Our take
Buy it for Excel and Teams meeting summaries, not for the chat. As a standalone assistant it trails ChatGPT and Claude; as an Office layer it removes real friction.

What Microsoft Copilot does
Copilot’s value is proportional to how much of your working day happens inside Microsoft 365. Inside Excel it will build and explain formulas, in Outlook it drafts and summarises threads, and in Teams it produces meeting notes and action items without anyone taking minutes.
How marketers actually use it
Its best moment is the end of a Teams call: the summary and action items are written before anyone has left the meeting. In Excel it will build the formula you were about to google, and explain what it does, which is the fastest way to stop being scared of pivot tables.
Best for
- Meeting summaries and action items in Teams
- Building and explaining Excel formulas
- Drafting and triaging Outlook threads
- Organisations already committed to Microsoft 365
Watch out for
The per-seat add-on cost is significant, and quality varies noticeably between the different Office apps.

Is Microsoft Copilot free?
There is a free consumer version. The version that actually matters — Copilot inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams — is a paid per-seat add-on to Microsoft 365.
Is Copilot worth it for a small marketing team?
Only if your work genuinely lives in Office. If you are in Google Workspace or mostly in a browser, a general assistant plus Gemini will serve you better for less.
Copilot or ChatGPT?
As a standalone assistant ChatGPT is clearly stronger. Copilot wins solely on integration — it can act on the file already open in front of you.
Is Copilot included in Microsoft 365?
The full Copilot inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams is a paid per-seat add-on, not part of a standard Microsoft 365 licence. The free consumer Copilot is a separate, more limited product.
What is Copilot best at for marketers?
Excel formulas and Teams meeting summaries, comfortably. Those two remove the most friction. Its writing and ideation trail ChatGPT and Claude noticeably.
