NotebookLM Review
Research Tool · AI Assistants & Research
Upload your own documents and get a research assistant that only answers from them.
Our take
Wildly underrated, and free. Loading every past proposal and client call into one notebook turns years of scattered work into something you can actually query — with almost no hallucination risk, because it has nothing else to draw on.

What NotebookLM does
NotebookLM is deliberately narrow and that is the point: it only answers from the sources you give it, with inline citations back to the exact passage. Load in your case studies, past proposals, call transcripts and product docs, and it becomes an internal knowledge base you can interrogate.
How marketers actually use it
Create one notebook and load it with every proposal you have sent, your case studies, and transcripts of your last twenty sales calls. Then ask it things you could never search for: which objection comes up most with ecommerce clients, how you described your pricing the last time it landed well, what you promised a client in month one.
Best for
- Turning past proposals and case studies into a searchable brain
- Interrogating a pile of call transcripts for common objections
- Briefing yourself on a client’s industry from their own documents
- Generating an audio overview to review work on a commute
Watch out for
It will not go beyond your uploads, so it is useless for anything requiring outside knowledge. Source limits apply per notebook.

Is NotebookLM really free?
Yes, free with a Google account. A higher-limit tier comes bundled with Google AI Pro, but the free version is enough for most marketers.
Can NotebookLM hallucinate?
Far less than a general chatbot, because it only answers from the sources you upload and cites the exact passage. It can still misread a source, so the citations are there to be clicked.
What can marketers use NotebookLM for?
Turning scattered past work into something queryable — proposals, case studies, call transcripts, competitor research, client documentation. It is an institutional memory tool more than a writing tool.
How many sources can I upload to NotebookLM?
There is a per-notebook source limit that Google adjusts over time, with a higher allowance on paid Google AI tiers. For most marketing use — a set of proposals or transcripts — the free limit is enough.
Is my data used to train Google’s models?
Google states that personal NotebookLM uploads are not used to train its models. If you are handling client-confidential material, check the current terms and your own client agreements before uploading.
