How it works

  1. Enter your page title and description. The counters show green when the length is inside the range Google normally displays in full.
  2. Add the canonical URL. This should be the address you want indexed, including the trailing slash if your site uses one.
  3. Fill in the site name, author and an Open Graph image if you have one. A 1200 × 630 image is the safe size across every platform.
  4. Copy the generated block and paste it inside the <head> of your page, replacing any existing title, description or canonical tag.

Why this matters

The title tag is the single largest on-page ranking factor you fully control, and it is also the line people read before deciding whether to click. Google rewrites titles it considers unhelpful, so a vague or padded one costs you twice.

Meta descriptions are not a ranking factor, but they are the sales line under your title. A page without one gets a fragment of body text scraped in its place, which is rarely the sentence you would have chosen.

Open Graph and Twitter card tags decide what your page looks like when someone shares it. Without them the platform guesses — usually badly, often with no image at all — and a link that could have been a rich card becomes a bare blue URL. Check the result with the Open Graph previewer.

Questions

How long should a title tag be?

Aim for 50–60 characters. Google truncates on pixel width rather than character count, so a title full of capital letters and wide characters gets cut earlier than the count suggests. Put the important words first and you are safe either way.

How long should a meta description be?

120–158 characters is the practical range. Below 120 you are leaving space unused; above about 158 the tail gets replaced with an ellipsis on desktop, and mobile cuts it shorter still.

Do I need both Open Graph and Twitter tags?

X falls back to Open Graph tags when Twitter-specific ones are missing, so strictly you can get away with OG alone. The extra three lines are worth including because twitter:card is what upgrades the preview from a small thumbnail to a large image card.

What should the robots tag say?

index, follow for anything you want in search. Use noindex, follow for thank-you pages, internal search results and thin filter pages — that keeps them out of the index while still letting link equity flow through them.

Where exactly do these tags go?

Inside <head>, before the closing </head> tag. Order does not matter, but there must only be one title, one description and one canonical per page — duplicates are a common cause of Google ignoring all of them.
